Mercedes-Benz has been building electric vehicles longer than many other traditional automakers through to its luxury EQS lineup. The EQS 450+ has sparked some controversy, particularly due to its exterior design, which, admittedly, I find less than appealing with its rounded, almost amorphous shape. However, after spending a week behind the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+, I can confidently say that its interior is unmatched.
The EQS 450+ is meticulously crafted to provide the ultimate in comfort and luxury, and it succeeds in doing so. While other automakers have faced challenges in maintaining build quality in their electric models, Mercedes-Benz has it figured out.
Admittedly, the interior aesthetic of the EQS 450+ might not resonate with everyone. Though undeniably opulent, there’s an element that feels slightly outdated – reminiscent of a spaceship designed with retirees in mind. Yet, one cannot overlook the lavishness, and after several driving sessions, I can confirm that it delivers exceptional comfort.
Quality Materials
The luxurious ambiance begins with the use of premium materials – a hallmark of Mercedes-Benz. Although not every detail feels high-end (the fan outlets, for instance, have a somewhat plastic feel), the majority of the interior is clearly built to last with top-tier materials.
The steering wheel is adorned with soft-touch stitched leather, while the doors and dashboard are swathed in stitched Alcantara, which feels just as good as it appears. The leather upholstery on the seats is both supple and resilient, designed to withstand everyday wear without sacrificing luxury. Complementing these features, natural wood accents lend a sophisticated, organic touch to the cabin.
The car’s technology is equally impressive, headlined by the expansive HyperScreen that spans the entire dashboard. This massive panel integrates three main displays for infotainment and instrumentation. In front of the driver, there’s a sizable instrument display, while a larger infotainment screen occupies the center. The front passenger is treated to their own 12.3-inch display for entertainment. All of the screens boast vivid, vibrant colors and exceptional brightness. Although Mercedes-Benz’s software could use some refinement, the visuals are undeniably crisp and clear.
Top-Tier Comfort
It’s possible for premium materials to look luxurious without being comfortable, but Mercedes-Benz avoids this pitfall entirely. The EQS 450+ is as comfortable as it is lavish – so much so that one might even argue the car verges on being overly comfortable. For example, the suspension is exceptionally soft, which can result in a somewhat muted driving experience. Fortunately, the car’s swift acceleration compensates for any lack of thrill.
Returning to comfort, the front seats offer a trifecta of features: heating, cooling, and massaging. Both driver and front passenger benefit from these features. Coupled with the plush padding and soft materials, the EQS 450+ arguably provides one of the most comfortable seating experiences available today. A pillow-soft headrest adds an extra touch of refinement, ensuring maximum comfort for long journeys.
The rear seats, while lacking the massaging, heating, and cooling features of the front row, are far from neglected. Backseat passengers still enjoy premium leather upholstery and plush padding, along with access to a third climate zone for personalized comfort.
A Class Apart
The Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+ occupies a niche in the electric vehicle market, with only a few rivals, such as the BMW i7, offering a comparable level of luxury and comfort. If you’re seeking the pinnacle of electric vehicle comfort, the EQS 450+ is a strong contender. Is it the most visually striking car on the road? Perhaps not. Despite its impressive speed, it can’t quite escape its polarizing exterior design. But when you’re investing over $104,400, luxury is non-negotiable – and, thankfully, the EQS 450+ delivers in abundance.
