The Edge Capsule Collection Is a Dialogue of Dualities

The juxtaposition of softness and rigidity create a visual tension that can’t be ignored in Alain Gilles’ Edge capsule collection for Milla & Milli. The three pieces – a dining table, bench, and bookshelf – share an identity but are diverse enough to express themselves individually. Soft, curved lines throughout make for a strong contrast against the rigid, architectural design of their silhouettes.

Horizontal and vertical planes are in play while contrast is created through different finishes. Edge’s upright elements – the legs and columns – are heavily sanded to create a rough, matte, and porous stone-like texture. Conversely, the tabletops are smooth and polished to a sheen. Though the same solid wood is used throughout the offerings, these finishes create the illusion that two different materials are at work.

Edge’s tabletop and bench have a substantial visual weight thanks to a whopping 6cm thick piece of Croatian oak. Aside from creating a modern feel, these components appear to have been carved from a single piece of wood. The strength and quality of this particular material allows even the longest bench to be absent of reinforcements or an extra middle foot.

Though related in style, each piece does have its own individual qualities. The table features legs that are joined at an angle to create a point of dynamism. Edge’s bench uses a connection perpendicular to the seat, with only a small gap between the front and back legs to create further tension. As for the bookshelf, its front and back are taken out of alignment in an unexpected detail that feels fresh and modern.

The Edge capsule collection is more versatile than you might think. The table could be used for its intended purpose of dining, or as a communal altar in public spaces. The benches were designed to be used around the table, but can be installed in museums or waiting areas too. As for the bookcases, they can double as room dividers, especially useful for structuring space in public forums or the office.
